Leyte has always shown great promise in the field of agriculture. With rice fields scoping out a major percentage of the area, it is simply wondrous to experience and see the different hues of green, yellow and orange encompassing the province.
In lieu with the agricultural promise of the province, there is another budding promise located in the 1st class municipality of Abuyog. This certain promise is in the person of Dr. Carlos dela Cruz. Dr dela Cruz is an agricultural scientist based in RIARC or the Regional Integrated Agricultural Research Center. And, he was the successful scientist to grab the title 2011 Gawad Saka Agricultural Scientist of the year. The basis of his success was based on his breakthrough studies and research materials on jackfruit production and pest management. As part of his winnings, Dr Carlos dela Cruz was able to gain a Php 1 million grant, awarded by the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR).
Some of the other 2011 Gawad Saka winners that gained success last December 13 in Malacañang were Anna C. Calgulada of Dujali, Davao and Alfredo Roble of Ormoc City, Leyte. Best integrated farmer Anna Calgulada gained Php 100,000 whilst Outstanding Hybrid Farmer Alfredo Roble also gained Php 100,000.
The Gawad Saka Awards, being lead by President Noynoy Aquino and Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala at the Rizal Hall in Malacanang, gave out a total of Php 4.25 million to outstanding farmers, fishermen and animal raisers. Agricultural organizations and councils were also not forgotten as 8 organizations from different parts of the Philippines were awarded.
